Joe Anne Smith

Joe Anne Smith, 74, of Orange, died May 15, 2008 at her home.

Funeral Services will be Monday, May 19th, at 10:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Orange. Officiating will be Reverend Margaret Desmond.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Sunday the 18th, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange.

Joe Anne was born May 21, 1933 in Orange. She was the daughter of Carl W. and Ina (Hudnall) Ericson.

Joe Anne graduated from the University of Texas where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi sorority. She was the director and teacher at the First Presbyterian Day School for many years and then taught at Community Christian School. She was one of the first teachers of Head Start and helped found the Lighthouse Soup Kitchen at the First Presbyterian Church. Joe Anne was a volunteer at Shangri La for many years.

She was an honorary life member of the Presbyterian Women and she was awarded the Community Service Award from the Camp Fire Girls.

Joe Anne was a very loving and kind person who devoted her life to the church. She was an avid bird watcher who loved her grandchildren as if they were her own children.

She was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Ina Ericson.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Clinton L. Smith of Orange, her sons, Clinton L. Smith, Jr. and his wife Mary Jo of Orange, Eric M. Smith and his wife Lucy of Orange; a daughter, Leigh Anne Saperstein and husband Phillip of Orange; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; brother, Carl W. Ericson and wife Trudy of Hill Top Lakes, TX; and a sister, Imogene Ericson of Orange.

Serving as pallbearers are Carlton Boudreaux, Johnathon Smith, Randy Barrilleaux, Ray O’ Connell, Gary Smith, and Jimmy Smith.

Honorary pallbearers are Sandy Sanford, Jimmy Winfrey, Francis Lyons, and Bill Duncan.

Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be sent to Lighthouse Soup Kitchen at the First Presbyterian Church, 902 Green Ave, Orange, TX 77630 or Southeast Texas Hospice, 912 W Cherry, Orange, TX 77630.
