Divers searching for car of murdered woman
The Port Arthur Dive Team was assisting Orange County Sheriff’s Office detectives on West Bluff Road Thursday night in searching for a vehicle with an area woman’s body reportedly still in it.
A recent tip involving information on the 11-year-old unsolved murder led detectives to search the boat ramp area on West Bluff Road near the Echo Northeast Oilfield and along the Sabine River.
Practice for the real thing
Armed with an ax and halogen, area firefighters trained wearing full bunker gear to follow their instincts and a fire hose through the heavy smoke.
Firefighters from Pinehurst, Orange, West Orange, Little Cypress and McLewis came together Thursday evening to train for realistic situations at the Orangehurst Shopping Center.
Orange man sentenced for federal drug violations
A 19-year-old Orange man has been sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for federal drug violations.
Clifton Merrill Brookshire was sentenced Wednesday for possession with intent to distribute cocaine by United States District Judge Thad Heartfield in the Eastern District of Texas, according to U.S. Attorney John L. Ratcliffe.
Shangri-La opening delayed until March ‘08
The opening of the Shangri-La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center, originally scheduled for October 5, has been moved back to March 2008.
Shangri-La executive director Michael Hoke said the weather was the driving factor behind the decision.
“We just had some insurmountable barriers,” Hoke said. “I stepped out there this morning and the mud was ankle-deep.”

Dennis and Jamie Winegar of Houston were stuck in late rush-hour traffic when the Mississippi River bridge beneath them began to shake. Their nephew yelled, “It’s an earthquake!”
“Then we realized the bridge was collapsing,” Jamie Winegar said. “Boom, boom, boom, and we were just dropping, dropping, dropping, dropping.”

Annual clothing drive to
benefit needy children
An annually held clothing drive is in dire straits this summer as clothing donations have tapered off over the last year.
The seventh annual “Back to School Clothing Drive” is scheduled starting at 8 a.m., Aug. 18 at Colony Baptist Church at 13353 FM 1130 in Mauriceville.
