GALVESTON, Texas — A Southeast Texas park pavilion destroyed by 2008's Hurricane Ike is expected to open next month with $1.6 million in upgrades.
The Galveston County Daily News (http://bit.ly/VZOOAc ) reported Monday that the Apffel Park pavilion will include a new boardwalk. Workers last week began adding wooden framing around the concrete pylons standing near the entrance to East Beach.
Park official Kelly de Schaun says federal funds are paying for 90 percent of the project. The rest of the money comes from city park board funds.
A portion of the pavilion will include updated bathrooms, showers and concession stands. Portable toilets had been placed at the park during the rebuilding.
The beach has parking space for around 7,000 vehicles.
