Vultures invading grounds at DuPont Sabine River Works

ORANGE — There is a problem at DuPont Sabine River Works and it will not go away on its own.

Black and turkey vultures have shown up by the dozens over the last six months at DuPont and making life around the plant a little difficult to manage.

The birds are roosting on plant columns and have forced officials with the company to call on wildlife experts to come in and help fix the problem.

Plant officials have tried to get rid of the birds using non-lethal methods but it has not worked. The next step are for officials to submit an application for a permit to dispose some of the birds as a plan to disperse the remaining population to a more suitable location.

“We make provisions to support wildlife in unused portions of our plant property, but when birds roost in and around process equipment it can create a potential health and safety hazard for employees and prevent equipment from operating properly,” a press release from DuPot said.

“The Black and Turkey Vultures are a protected species regulated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,” the statement explained.

DuPont engaged a third-party company to verify the bird population and assistance in developing the final plan to disperse the birds.

“The Black and Turkey Vultures are not regulated by the state of Texas, so no permit is required,” the statement concluded.
