The Gulf Coast “Jazz Event of the Year” is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 7, as Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis takes the Lutcher Theater stage. Jazz at Lincoln Center celebrates its 25th anniversary and the formation of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis' 25th Anniversary Tour. From January to March 2013, the tour will take the world-renowned big band across the U.S.: from Portland, Maine to Tallahassee, Fla. and from Austin, Texas to Davis, Calif. The JLCO will bring JALC’s milestone 25th anniversary celebration to 27 cities and Orange, Texas is one of only 3 Texas dates for this tour.
Feel the fusion of 15 of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players today comprising The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra under the leadership of musical director, trumpeter, composer and educator Wynton Marsalis. Orchestra members scheduled to perform at the Lutcher for this performance include Wynton Marsalis, Music Director, Trumpet; Ryan Kisor, Trumpet; Marcus Printup, Trumpet; Kenny Rampton, Trumpet; Vincent R. Gardner, Trombone; Elliot Mason, Trombone; Chris Crenshaw, Trombone; Sherman Irby, Saxophones; Ted Nash, Alto and Soprano Saxophones, Clarinet; Walter Blanding, Tenor and Soprano Saxophones, Clarinet; Victor Goines, Tenor and Soprano Saxophones, Bb and Bass Clarinets; Joe Temperley, Baritone and Soprano Saxophones, Bass Clarinet; Dan Nimmer, Piano; Carlos Henriquez, Bass; and Ali Jackson, Drums.
Although the program will be announced from the stage, JLCO is slated to perform a brilliant repertoire, which may include classic Blue Note Records selections and tunes made famous by John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Gerry Mulligan, John Lewis and more.
In 1987, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis was comprised of the surviving members of the Duke Ellington Big Band and the Wynton Marsalis Septet. The critically acclaimed resident orchestra continues to perform a repertoire across the full jazz spectrum - from the music's New Orleans roots to bebop to modern jazz. By creating and performing an expansive range of brilliant new music for quartets, big bands, chamber music ensembles, symphony orchestras, tap dance, and ballet, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra has expanded the vocabulary for jazz and created a vital body of work that places the group among the finest musicians today.
