City secretary to retire at end of February

ORANGE — A key figure in city business has announced retirement plans after more than three decades of employment.

Kerry Kittrell, the Orange City Secretary, has announced she will retire after more than 34 years of employment with the City of Orange. Her last day to work will be Thursday, Feb. 28.

“It was a hard decision to make, but I’m ready,” Kittrell said with a slight laugh. “I want to spend some time with my family and my grandkids, and I want to do more of the hobbies I enjoy like gardening, photography and walking.”

Kittrell’s employment with the City of Orange began in 1978 at the City of Orange Employees Federal Credit Union, which was located inside the Orange Fire Department. She worked there for 12 years before becoming secretary to the Orange chief of police in 1991.

She was named as the assistant city secretary in March 1994 and became city secretary in February 1999, where she has worked since that time.

Kittrell said the hardest part about retiring will be leaving the friends she has made while working at City Hall, including co-workers and many of the citizens which has come to know personally over the years.

While Kittrell has been part of many major events in the City of Orange, it’s Hurricanes Rita and Ike which strike the most vivid memories for her.

“It’s not the negative side of the storms that I remember, but it’s the good things that came from them,” she said. “It was the team effort we all had. It was seeing how the people of Orange pulled together and rebuilt after two totally different kinds of storms. That’s what I recall the most.”
