Man involved in Orange bank robbery in custody

ORANGE — A man believed to be involved in a local bank robbery this past December is currently in custody in Louisiana.

Samuel David Sanford III is currently in jail in Shreveport, La., according to information from the Orange Police Department. Sanford was reportedly arrested for an outstanding warrant for robbery in Galveston County.

The Chase Bank location at 3109 16th St. in Orange was robbed by a white male on Thursday, Dec. 19. According to local authorities, an “alert citizen” at a nearby business happened to see a “subject” acting suspiciously and wrote down the license plate of the truck driven by the individual.

The “alert citizen” later contacted the Orange Police Department with this information after learning of the robbery at Chase Bank. This information helped detectives at the Orange Police Department and representatives of the FBI identify the robber as Sanford.

Sanford, 35, is a resident of the Galveston area. Authorities relayed the information to other law enforcement agencies in Texas and Louisiana in an attempt to locate and detain him.

Police said Sanford was arrested the following day, Dec. 20, in Shreveport, La., where he been detained since that time. He was indicted by the Federal Grand Jury of the Eastern District of Texas for bank robbery on Jan. 23. If convicted, Sanford could face up to 20 years in prison, a fine of as much as $250,000 or possibly both.
