Customer throws beer at store clerk and assaults him

ORANGE — A customer became violent after a store clerk refused to sell him beer.

Officer with the Orange Police Department were called Friday night to the Smart Stop Food Store about a disturbance in the parking lot, according to a report.

The officer wrote he saw a black male and a white male fighting at the intersection of Strickland and Ridgemont. The black male reportedly told the officer the white male had a knife. The white male began running west on Ridgemont toward Bay Street.

He was located between a dumpster and a cement wall.

He was identified as Christopher Rowsey. The report stated he has a history of fighting and the officer knew him when he was in the Orange County Jail.

The officer wrote a knife was found on Rowsey during a search.

The clerk at the store was then contacted. He said Rowsey entered the store and attempted to buy a six pack of beer.

The clerk told Rowsey he was too intoxicated and would not sell him anymore alcohol. Rowsey became upset and the six pack of bottles at the clerk.

The clerk then locked the doors and called the police. Rowsey assaulted the clerk. He then got a 12 pack of beer and threw it through the glass door.

The officer wrote Rowsey began beating his head against the window of the patrol car while he was speaking with the clerk. Rowsey continued beating his head even after he was told to stop, the report read.

Rowsey was hobbled and placed on his stomach. He acted like he was about to spit on an officer and a spit mask was placed on his head.

Rowsey was transported to the Orange County Jail.

The officer claimed he told him and the other officers he was going to find them and fight them when they were off duty. Dispatch revealed Rowsey allegedly had a previous conviction out of the Orange County Court at Law for evading arrest.
