McFaddin-Ward House to present ‘The Art of Community’ picnic and quilt exhibit

BEAUMONT —  The McFaddin-Ward House Museum invites the public to attend their upcoming “Art of Community” Picnic and Quilt Exhibit from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18. Guests are invited to bring a quilt or blanket and a picnic to enjoy on the museum grounds. The event is free and open to the public.

A Lamar University jazz ensemble, “The Community Quartet,” will provide entertainment during the event. The museum will offer free first-floor tours of the house, and quilts from both the museum's collection and from their docents and staff will be on display. The event is planned to highlight the community that the quilting art form creates and the history of the craft.

The event will also kick off a week-long opportunity to tour “Our Town,” what would have been the McFaddins’ neighborhood, stretching from 1st to 11th Streets and Smart Street to Interstate 10.

The museum is asking residents and business owners in that area to participate by sharing the “story” of their home or property. The stories will be added to a blog the museum maintains,, and a sign will be placed in the participants yards during the self-guided tour, which will be available from Oct. 18 - Oct. 25, 2012. Participation is encouraged and there is no cost to the home or business owner, however, participants must sign up by Monday, Oct. 8.

Contact the museum at 409-832-1906 for more details and information on the neighborhood tour.
