Chili for scholarships

Local non-profit group fundraiser assists students for college

ORANGE — Helping a student continue his or her education never tasted so good.

The Orange chapter of Altrusa International, Inc. held its annual chili supper fundraiser Thursday inside the Gillespie Building of First Presbyterian Church in Orange. The group uses this fundraiser campaign to assist two students annually with scholarships.

“We give out two $500 scholarships every year to two area high school graduates,” said President Gale Beckett. “We prepare 40 gallons of chili to fill our orders and meet our goal.”

Beckett said the goal is to raise $1,000, which meets the required monetary figure needed for the two scholarships. Since the group is a non-profit organization, extra funds are not required.

“We sell 200 tickets at five dollars each, and, once those tickets are sold, that’s it,” Beckett added. “We just want to make the required amount for the scholarships. Otherwise we might be here all day selling chili.”

The Altrusa group has the process down to a fine art. Whether it is the assembly line of women preparing orders in to-go containers, one full of rice and the other chili, or browning the beef in a giant skillet or cooking the rice, or even delivering the food to area residents and businesses, the group is never short on volunteers or support.
