Autumn Fair concludes Scarecrow Festival

ORANGE — Enjoy the final day of the Scarecrow Festival at Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center by attending the annual Autumn Fair this Saturday.

From 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 10, guests are invited to come cheer for a favorite scarecrow as prizes are awarded to the winning scarecrow designs. This year’s festivities will provide a day full of family-friendly fun in celebration of the fall season. Regular entry fee to Shangri La gives visitors access to all activities for a whole day of excitement. Visitors wishing to go on an Outpost Tour must purchase a ticket at the admission window. All ages are welcome.

This year’s event includes lots of fun activities and opportunities to win prizes. New this year to Autumn Fair will be a Pumpkin Pie and Recipe Contest. Those wishing to enter the contest should submit entry forms and recipes for judging by November 9, 2012. Winners of the Pumpkin Pie Contest and Scarecrow Festival will be announced in the Courtyard at 2 p.m.

Whether decorating a pumpkin to take home, participating in a game of pumpkin bowling, making a corn husk doll, getting an autumn face painting, going on a haystack hunt or air-bobbing for apples, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. During the Scarecrow Dress-n-Dash, dash to the designated clothing-area, dress like a scarecrow and dash back to the starting line to be proclaimed the winner.

In addition, meet Maxine, Shangri La’s rehabilitated owl, at the Discovery Theater from 11 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., and live animals will be the feature of the Up Close with Nature program, taking place in the Courtyard from 2 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Get a face-to-face lesson about animals that call Shangri La home.

Take an animal-related class, Saturday Adventure Series: Creepy Critters, which will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Included in this program will be information about some creepy animals - snakes and spiders, which inhabit the area. Space is limited for the Saturday Adventure Series program and an RSVP is required to attend. To reserve a seat, call 409-670-9799.

Autumn Fair offers something to entertain everyone in attendance. Outpost tours will be available during the day, and a fall obstacle course will give visitors a fun challenge. From 9 a.m. until noon, the inside parking lot will have an antique car show, and from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. attendees can learn to use items from the garden to make delicious treats, during the Cooking in the Garden program.

This year’s game, Guess the Seeds, will be available for visitors of all ages. This contest will allow participants to polish their guessing skills by trying to guess the weight of a jar filled with seeds at the volunteer center station. The closest guess wins a prize.

“This year’s Autumn Fair will be a fun-family event that will have activities for all ages to come and enjoy,” say Michael Hoke of Shangri La. “If you haven’t been out to see and vote for your favorite scarecrow, now is the time to do so. Also, don’t forget to enter this year’s Pumpkin Pie and Recipe Contest.”
