Starting Over

ORANGE — Looking for a cheap date, I visited the Red Box kiosk.  The movie that caught my eye tells the story of three aboriginal girls who go to a talent show and audition.  They perform far better than the other contestants but when they get up to sing no one in the audience claps.  When they finish, one little boy claps, at least until his mother gives him the eye.  When the owner of the club announces someone else as the winner, the hired M.C. protests and says, no that the trio is the clear winner.  In response, the M.C. and the trio are kicked out.  But they strike up a deal with the M.C. to try out for another engagement that would take them to the jungles of Vietnam singing soul music such as you might hear from The Supremes.  The movie follows their trip and the peril they go through.  The thing that really got to me was when they tried out for the original talent show and their song selection.  You have three girls; one on guitar, all with Australian accents singing country and western.  They sang the old Merle Haggard hit, “Today I Started Loving You Again.”  You may remember the lyrics:

“Today I Started Loving You Again

I'm right back where I've really always been;

I got over you just long enough to let my heartache mend,

then Today I Started Loving You Again.

Of course we know that he was singing to his woman, and the heartache of that broken relationship and the realization that healing had progressed enough to allow forgiveness and trust.  Then we come to the second verse and find the remorse of the loss of the relationship, “what a fool I was”.

What a fool I was to think I could get by

With only these few million tears I've cried.

I should have known the worst was yet to come.

And that crying time for me had just begun.

Then he takes us back to the first verse, where he opens the door for reconciliation.  Many relationships could apply here not just those of a couple.  I've seen many people have broken relationships with the church and walk away from them only to realize how foolish they had been.  I have seen many more relationships where people have walked away from Jesus and found themselves absolutely lost.

“What a fool I was to think I could get by . . . Cause loving you again.”  Not attending church, not praying?  Maybe it's time you should start again.
