ORANGE — A local city councilman is running for a position as a county official.

Ron Cowling Sr. officially filed with the Orange County Republican Party on Tuesday to run on the Republican ticket for the Orange County Commissioner seat in Precinct 2. The seat is currently held by Commissioner Owen Burton, a Democrat, who has stated he will not seek re-election.

Cowling, 70, is currently a city councilman for the City of Pinehurst. He will not be required to step-down from his seat as a councilman since it is only a two-year term.

“I am putting Orange County first,” Cowling said in a previous interview with The Orange Leader. “The county is struggling financially and, in my opinion, spending cuts, not raising taxes are the answer. My grandchildren’s future is at stake here and I’m willing to stand up and fight for them. I am entering this race to win.”

Cowling has already filed a treasurers report for his campaign with the Orange County Election Administration office.
