ORANGE — Campaign season is now in full swing and the United Way needs your help.

The United Way of Orange County is working on meeting its goal of raising $850,000 for the 2013-2014 campaign. The campaign season began in mid-August with the annual “Kick-Off Breakfast” and is quickly heading toward its deadline at the end of November.

During that breakfast event, early donations pushed the fundraising goal to 18 percent of its objective. As of Friday, the total was at 40 percent of its goal, or approximately $340,000.

“Last year was the first time in several years that we exceeded our goal,” said Linn Cardner, executive director of the United Way of Orange County. “But you can’t compare years because the progress is different each year. A lot of it has to do with when each of our partners kick-off their fundraising. One business may start a couple of weeks later than it did last year, so it might look like things are behind when they are really the same or better.”

Cardner said the target date for the end of the campaign is the end of November.

This year’s campaign theme is “Building a Community.” Funds donated to the United Way of Orange County are invested by a network of experienced volunteers into the “basic building blocks” for a good life and programs which produce results in area of education, income, health and basic needs.

The United Way of Orange County assists 23 agencies across Southeast Texas with funding which is donated by individuals and businesses. Some of these organizations include Orange County Action Association, Southeast Texas Hospice, Salvation Army, Vidor Children’s Fund, Habitat for Humanity, Boy Scouts of America, Camp Fire USA, Girl Scouts, OCARC and many others.

“The citizens of Orange County have always supported the United Way and those that are less fortunate,” Cardner added. “We are hoping they will come through for us again this year.”
