BCISD to hold preliminary bond talk with public

BRIDGE CITY — Bridge City ISD wants your opinion.

The Bridge City Independent School District will hold a public forum at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 9, inside the cafeteria of Bridge City Elementary, 1035 W. Roundbunch Road, to gather information on the potential of calling bond election.

“We, as a district, are at the point where we are trying to decide what to do,” said Mike King, superintendent of Bridge City ISD. “This is our second community meeting. We are just going to discuss the findings of the facilities committee and we want to hear what the community’s thoughts are on what we are talking about.”

King said the district commissioned a facilities committee in early 2013 and this group of people have spent months visiting each of the campuses and seeing what improvements are needed to maintain the growing district.

The district’s enrollment at its four campuses has surpassed pre-Hurricane Ike figures as more than 2,700 students are currently attending class in the district, an increase of approximately 17 percent since 2008.

“The group met several times and identified some needs they felt need attention,” King added. “They will explain that information on Monday.”

King also stated there has been discussion of upgrades to athletic facilities, but would not specify which, and there has been consideration of construction of a performing arts facility.

“The district has made no decision at all on calling for a bond election. We are just gathering information and presenting it to our citizens,” he said. “We are just trying to decide what to do, when to do it, and if we need to do it at all.”
