Abbott announces bid for District Clerk position

Special to The Leader
The Orange Leader

ORANGE — My name is Kay Abbott. I am a Republican candidate for Orange County District Clerk.

I have been married to my husband, Mike Abbott, for 25 years. Mike is a local attorney/mediator. We have four children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

As a consequence of working 35 plus years in the legal environment, including almost five years as intake clerk in the District Clerk’s office, I am the candidate best equipped to recognize, and address, those issues most important to the public, the courts and the attorneys who practice in those courts.

I am currently the legal assistant for Jerry Pennington, and work closely with the District and County Court at Law courts, as well as attorneys and the public.

My goal as District Clerk is to coordinate with the judges, attorneys and the public to establish a professional environment of integrity and accommodation. And in partnership with our local judges, I hope to take advantage of current technology to phase in e-filing and to make public records accessible online, making it easier and more efficient for attorneys and the public with a need to access those records. Furthermore, these moves will save scarce taxpayer dollars.

I also strongly feel that the deputy clerks should have current, and thorough, training in those areas of services the clerk’s office provides. I will upgrade the District Clerk’s office utilizing everything at my disposal to enhance the quality of service to those with a need to interact with the clerk’s office, to maximize the abilities of the deputy clerks, and to minimize the expense to the taxpayer.

I am a passionate and optimistic person with a commitment to service. And I will never forget that the District Clerk’s office exists to serve you.

I pledge that, as District Clerk, I will treat all individuals, including employees, with the utmost respect, dignity and fairness. You deserve no less.

In addition to other duties, the office of the District Clerk provides support for the district courts and in Orange County, to the County Courts at Law in domestic cases. The Clerk is custodian of all court pleadings and papers that are part of any cause of action, civil, family or criminal, in those courts served by the Clerk. The District Clerk indexes and secures all court records, collects filing fees, and handles funds held in litigation and money awarded to minors.

The District Clerk’s office is also responsible for summoning the Grand Jurors and the Petit Jurors.

I would appreciate your support and your vote in the Republican Primary on March 4, 2014.
