West Orange-Cove CISD continues process of transformation

ORANGE — Transformation continues within the West Orange – Cove school system. Teachers and staff reporting for the first day of the 2013-2014 school year attended the Third Annual Transformation Assembly, a presentation by Superintendent James Colbert, on Monday.

Traditionally, the Transformation Assembly has had a theme, Colbert said.

“In the first Transformation Assembly, we used a theme of getting on the bus to begin the hard work and process of transforming the district,” Colbert explained. “During the second Transformation Assembly, we used an ‘Audacity to Believe’ theme which emphasized our need to see the brilliance within each individual student and commit to moving forward to become an exceptional school district.

“‘Putting All the Pieces Together’ was the theme for Transformation III.  We used a visual concept to recognize that systemic components have been implemented and are being actualized. We need to continue to build off of this momentum that we have created. Additionally, we need to believe in the potential of our students and our school district,” Colbert said.

Like previous Transformation assemblies, the progress of the previous year was reviewed, as well as the District’s mission and vision. The presentation also included video footage that ranged from highlights of a former Olympian to an inspirational movie clip. A parent video message closed the program. In the video, parents from all campuses encouraged staff to “keep challenging my child” and “love my child as I do.” Most importantly however, the program sought to inspire and encourage teachers and staff as they begin the new school year.

“The entire transformation assembly was great. I’ve actually been looking forward to it,” said West Orange–Stark High School teacher Diztorsha Lavan. “It is so rewarding to think about how far our district has come and how much we have literally transformed. This year’s assembly was even more inspiring for me, hearing the progress that we’ve all made – students, teachers, administrators, and parents too. You can sense the change in our entire culture. It’s apparent that our district is on the right track and the success we’re achieving now is just the beginning of greater things to come.”

West Orange–Stark High School senior Laquarious Paige, an extraordinary student athlete and academic leader in the West Orange-Stark High School Class of 2014, started the assembly with a piano solo. He has earned numerous honors as an outstanding basketball player. He is being recruited by Harvard, Rice University, Abilene Christian, and number of other colleges and universities.
