Book Review: Adopting Darrell

ORANGE — The number of cases of Shaken Baby Syndrome are only estimates as many cases are misdiagnosed. The Child Abuse Prevention Center website states the numbers to suffer are anywhere between 1,400 - 10,000 a year.

The victims that survive can have severe brain damage.

Carol V. Weishampel, Ed.D wrote ‘Adopting Darrell: A mother's faith journey in parenting a profoundly difficult child’ to share with others the story of her adopted son Darrell.

Darrell was premature and spent his first four weeks of life in the hospital. One week home, his doctor is calling in suspicions of abuse because the baby has a broken arm. Shortly thereafter, the baby is brought to the hospital again.

He was never allowed to live with his biological parents again.

A baby. A newborn. A premature baby.

Weishampel adopted Darrell, who was placed with her when he was three and a half years old.

Weishampel tells the story of the difficulties she and her family as they faced Darrell’s violent temper tantrums and untrainable behavior.

Weishampel is the mother of two biological and ten adopted children.

The book offers hope to parents of a special needs or severely disabled child while also showing the long term lasting effects of a person who suffers from Shaken Baby Syndrome.

Adopting Darrell, 128 pages, is published by Hannibal Books in 2005.

The book is available in book stores and at
