Orange County gives a ‘whole lot of hope’ at Relay for Life

The 14th Annual Orange County Relay for Life was a successful event Friday night despite the wind and cooler temperatures.

“We know what to when it rains,” Shari Chesson, chairman of this year's event said. “We prayed for no mosquitos so, I guess this is God’s answer to no mosquitos”.

Cathy Day is the fundraiser chairperson.

The event started at 6:30 p.m. Friday to 6:30 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at Bridge City High School's Larry Ward Stadium.

Over 40 teams and over 450 participants raising $78,004.39 at time of publication shows that Orange County is continuing the fight for a cure in honor of those who have lost the fight as well as survivors.

Relay for life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. This year’s theme was “A Little Bit of Texas, A Whole Lot of Hope.”

Chesson said she has a great committee to help her with the event.

Chesson also said that Day was instrumental for the fundraising.

The American Cancer Society puts the donations to work, investing in groundbreaking research in every type of cancer and providing free information and services to cancer patients and their caregivers according to the Relay for Life website.

The Relay began back in 1985 with the vision of one single

volunteer, Dr. Gordy Klatt, who ran around a track in his hometown, Tacoma, Washington, for 24 hours asking for support from people he knew, raising $27,000.

Each team member is required to raise $100. Team members can fundraise individually or collectively.

Various entertaining activities were held throughout the night in Bridge City. They included cake walks, a silent auction, box races, crazy laps, a hula hoop contest, line dancing, and other games.

The Relay for Life held a Luminary Ceremony at 10 p.m. This candlelight program remembers individuals who have lost their battle with cancer and honors those who are fighting and/or have survived.
