Teen struck and killed by car Monday night

ROSE CITY — A Vidor teenager was struck and killed by a car Monday evening on Interstate 10.

Sierra Phillips, a 14-year-old girl from Vidor, died Monday evening after she was struck by an automobile on Interstate 10 at the Neches River Bridge in Orange County.

According to Trooper Stephanie Davis of the Texas Department of Public Safety, a black Infinity automobile driven by Debra Krenek of Houston was traveling east on Interstate shortly before 7:45 p.m., Monday. Krenek stated she was driving in the outside lane of the Interstate when Phillips reportedly walked from the middle of the highway into eastbound traffic. Krenek was unable to avoid Phillips and struck her with the vehicle.

All eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 were closed as troopers with the DPS investigated the incident. Traffic lanes reopened at approximately 10:15 p.m., Monday.

Krenek was transported to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont for observation. Only one passengers, her husband, Michael Krenek, was in the vehicle at the time of the incident. He was not injured.

Phillips was reported missing by her parents after she did not come home from school, according to David Vandagriff, Asst. Chief of Police of the Vidor Police Department.

“We took the report of a runaway instead of the Vidor ISD Police Department and immediately began looking for her,” Vandagriff said. “Her mother went out with us for a bit, and then continued the search on her own while we continued our search. Sadly, it was less than two hours later when we were informed of the incident at the bridge and located her there.”

Vandagriff stated it was a family relative, a grandmother, who arrived at the scene at the Neches River Bridge and identified Phillips.
