Bulls, Barrels and Honey Bears

ORANGE — A yearly event featuring exciting rodeo action and cowboys and cowgirls which benefits a local school group is back this Saturday night.

The eighth annual Bulls and Barrels Rodeo, benefiting the Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School Honey Bears Drill Team, will take place starting at 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Cowboy Church of Orange County Arena, located at 673 FM 1078 in Orange. The gates open at 5 p.m. and admission is $5 per person.

“This is a wonderful family event,” said Lynda Newman, president of the Honey Bears Booster Club. “That is what makes it such a positive attraction for the community each year. It has lots of great rodeo events and fun things for the kids to enjoy too.”

The always popular event, which is being held at the Cowboy Church arena for the second consecutive year, includes many of the traditional rodeo events people know and expect each year, including bull riding, barrel racing, as well as junior bull riding and junior barrel racing, plus events for the little buckaroos such as mutton bustin’ and a calf scramble.

Members of the Honey Bears are heavily involved with the rodeo operations. The girls not only handle duties with concessions, but also work other areas of the rodeo including registration and other duties to help make the rodeo run smoothly.

Proceeds from the annual rodeo benefit the Honey Bears Drill Team program greatly.

“We use the proceeds for things like props, new uniforms and new pom-poms,” Newman added. “Last year these funds assisted the girls with their trip to Disney World. The funds also help with our senior banquet, our Christmas party and camp costs. The rodeo is just one of the many ways we raise money for the drill team during the year.”

Dr. Terri Estes, principal of Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School, will serve as the Honorary Grand Marshal of the rodeo. Also, along with all of the exciting rodeo action, the Honey Bears will perform during the event as well as added entertainment.

Newman also said for those interested in participating in the rodeo there is still time to enter.

“We are still looking for cowboys and cowgirls who want to participate,” she stated. “Registration opens at 4 p.m., Saturday. It’s not too late to get out there and be part of a really great rodeo event.”
