Celebrating accomplishments

ORANGE — A Texas Stetson cowboy hat, a Texas belt buckle, a pair of Texas cowboy boots and a proclamation recognizing one’s accomplishments and tributes to the IBEW expressed the pride of one brother to another during a retirement celebration. Men retire all the time, but there is something different about Don Guillot retiring.

Don started as an Apprentice Lineman for Gulf States Utilities Co. and progressed to a Journeyman Lineman.

A lineman are the ones who install and maintain telephone, telegraph, cable TV and more recent fiber optic lines.

But Don was more that just a lineman, he also served in the IBEW LU 77, located in Seattle, Washington, in almost every appointed or elected office within the local.

Don served as Business Manager/ Financial Secretary for the IBEW LU 77 for several terms.

The IBEW LU 77 is a multi-state jurisdiction with over 7,000 members and over 70 collective bargaining units.

“He is a hometown boy that made good,” West Orange Mayor Roy McDonald said. “We are proud of what he accomplished.”

A proclamation in recognition of his accomplishments was presented to Don during the retirement celebrations reads, “Don has held the Business Manager/ Financial Secretary  many terms and has been judged competent, successful and so popular that he had no opposition for the position in the last two elections. This is quite an achievement and is extremely rare and unusual in the normally intense elections of a very large union membership.”

“He served nine years as Business Manager,” Roland Guillot, Don’s older brother. “It is a stressful job.”

Roland also said the celebration was held in the new IBEW LU 77 Union Hall located in SeaTac, Washington is the same hall that Don helped to create.

“It had only been open for a couple of weeks before the celebration,” Roland said.

Roland also said that among the persons attending the event were IBEW Vice President of the 9th District Mike Mowrey, IBEW Vice President of the 7th District Jonathan Garner, former Washington State Senator and State Representative Joe Tanner, many International Executive Committee members and well as family and friends.

“I have known him all his life,” West Orange Councilman Mike Trahan said, “I am proud of his accomplishments.”

Roland also presented Don and his wife, Debbie, with a plaque for the supportive effort of their partnership enhancing the advancement, growth and security all IBEW members at the local and national level.

“We wanted to recognize Debbie for her dedication too,” Roland said.

Approximately 100 people attended the retirement celebration.
