The Orange Leader
Texas Sen. Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville) won re-election Tuesday and now will represent 18 counties in East Texas, including Orange County, and part of Montgomery County.
Nichols wil represent District 3, which was formed in 2011 after the state was put through a lengthy redistricting process.
“I am honored to again have the opportunity to continue to represent District 3 in the Texas Senate,” Nichols said. “When I first ran, I asked people for their vote based on trust. To be re-elected based on my record of making government smaller, more efficient and more accountable speaks to the values of the voters in the district.”
Nichols was recently appointed to chair the Senate Committee on Transportation. He also serves on the Natural Resources, Health and Human Services, Intergovernmental Relations and Nominations committees.
In 2010, he was appointed to the Sunset Commission, which reviews state governmental agencies to identify and eliminate waste, duplication and inefficiencies. Nichols worked to eliminate four state agencies last year, saving taxpayers over $161 million.
He has also voted to pass a balanced budget in each of the three Legislative Sessions he has served, including cutting $8.7 billion in total spending from the current budget.
“The Legislature faces many challenges this session, and we cannot make good decisions unless we are listening closely to those we represent,” Nichols said. “Education is and always will be one of the most important issues we face as a state. Other top priorities include keeping goods and people moving on our transportation systems, and protecting our natural resources for future generations.”
U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady won re-election Tuesday to a ninth term. He will respresent District 8, this district does not include Orange County.
“Because I’ve never moved to Washington, voters know I never forget who I work for,” Brady said. “Representing our communities in Congress is a privilege and I’m very thankful to my constituents for sending me back to work for them. I’ll continue to fight for a stronger economy, lower taxes, balanced budget, secure border and greater freedom from the growing threat of big government.
“America is standing at a precarious point. The President and Congress simply can’t keep ducking the tough issues. We need to act now - right now - to tackle America’s dangerous debt crisis, reform our oppressive tax code and find real solutions to preserve Social Security and Medicare for every generation without raising taxes.”
