Vidor man drowns in Neches River

VIDOR — A local man drowned Friday afternoon following a fishing trip on the banks of the Neches River.

Lindsey Josephy Bertrand Jr., 53, of Vidor drowned Friday after he and a group of friends went fishing along the Neches River off Four Oaks Ranch Road, which is located off FM 1131 in extreme north Vidor.

According to Chad Hogan, public information officer for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, a call was received at approximately 2:45 p.m. reporting a man had drowned.

According to Hogan, Bertrand and four friends were fishing on the river, but a log approximately 30 feet out was obstructing their fishing, so Bertrand entered the water to move the log. At this point, Bertrand was swept off his feet, pulled under water and did not resurface.

The other four individuals attempted to locate and rescue Bertrand but were unsuccessful, which is when they called the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

Units from Orange County Emergency Services District 1, Texas Game Wardens, Beaumont Fire Department, and Federal Park Rangers responded to the scene with personnel and boats.

Bertrand’s body was located shortly after 5:30 p.m. near the same area in which he disappeared.
