The Orange Leader
AUSTIN, Texas — The claim that nearly 102,000 Texas students are on waitlists for charter schools statewide is too high by about 8,000.
According to a Texas Charter Schools Association survey conducted last summer, 101,851 Texas students were on charter school waitlists.
The Associated Press polled anew eight of the top 10 charter operators participating in that survey. Their waitlists accounted for 86,771 students then, or 85 percent of the entire list.
They now report waitlists of 78,836 as of late April, nearly 8,000 less than last summer.
But it's also true that those waitlists continue to grow at record speed.
And a push in the Legislature to expand the number of charter schools allowed to operate across Texas will have little impact on actually meeting that demand in the short term.
