County moves forward with collection site fees

ORANGE — Orange County Commissioners Court approved the new fees for the Collection Site during the Monday afternoon meeting.

The number of people using the site has doubled in the last few months causing County Engineer Carl Slacum to become concerned with operating with the budget. Last weeks meeting the court approved charging fees and implementing a sticker program to ensure only residents were using the site.

Slacum said during last weeks meeting that he was concerned commercial companies were using the site.

The Disposal Pass will be required for all non-recyclable materials brought to the station. The pass will be valid for up to $20 and must be prepurchased before using the site. There is no charge for using the recycling bins.

The stickers and disposal passes can be purchased at the Road and Bridge office which are temporarily located behind Veteran's Office at 10984 FM 1442.

Commissioner Pct. 2 Owen Burton asked the court to consider a 50% discount for senior citizens.

Commissioner Pct. 3 John Banken was concerned with the drywall and wood products on the restriction list.

“A person would waste a whole day if they had to drive to Newton to dispose of those items.” Banken said.

County Judge Carl Thibodeaux said that was for commercial companies and no commercial stickers will be sold for the site.

“We will not relax on refusing shingles, paint or hazardous waste,” Thibodeaux said.

Burton asked if people would get cut off due to the dumpsters becoming full.

Slacum said that should not be an issue once the program becomes active.

Slacum said he was trying to find other locations for purchasing the passes to make it easier for citizens.

“We had over 300 people at the site last Saturday.” Slacum said. “We want to make this as easy as possible for people.”

The court approved the fees and a 50% discount for citizens 65 and older.

In other business the court took no action on a bid submitted for trust property until further investigation could be completed.

Commissioner Pct. 4 Jody Crump said it appeared the only driveway to the house located behind the property was on trust property.

“I am concerned the house will become land locked.” Crump said.

Thibodeaux said the court would pass on the item so the court would have an opportunity to study and for further investigation.

A bid on a different trust property was approved for the bid of $8,850.
