National Model Railroad Month ends with open house

BRIDGE CITY — The Port Taylor and Pacific Railroad rides again.

The model railroad layout, owned and operated by Mickey Taylor of Bridge City, is a representation of the Texas and Pacific Railroad between Shreveport, Louisiana and El Paso, Texas.

Taylor held an open house on Saturday in celebration of National Model Railroad Month.

Taylor lost his layout in 2008 due to Hurricane Ike.

“It took three years to get it back,” Taylor said. “Jeff Hamilton, Less McMan, and Philip Comeaux helped me rebuild it. I  owe them a great thanks.”

The layout for the tracks fills a 24 x 27 foot two car garage with the trains running through tunnels and around walls with the four trains stopping at passenger stations or switching stations for industrial loading and unloading. Many of the building in the layout are lighted to allow for nighttime operation as well.

Taylor’s children, now grown, would ride their three wheelers or play with cars under the layouts according to Sheryl Taylor, wife.

“When it came time to run the trains, he would say ‘Your slowing down the Southern Pacific’.” Sheryl said while laughing.

Mickey Taylor said he is part of the open house every year as well as member of the East Texas and Gulf Rail Modelers Association.

The group participates in the World’s Greatest Hobby Train Show Jan. 11 -12, 2014 in Houston and the Train Festival held at DeQuincy Railroad Museum, 400 Lake Charles Ave.,, DeQuincy, Louisiana, the second weekend in April.
