For travelers, adventurers, writers and explorer-artists who traversed the wild landscapes of America, their ultimate goal was to document and tell stories that captivated the imagination of their audiences. Learn more about the artists and authors behind many classic travelogues and vivid images, which are a fascinating part of the Stark Museum and Stark House collections. The authors in this exhibition created stories that stood the test of time, in some cases, hundreds of years and the artists highlighted in Tales and Travels created images that bring each story to life. These imaginative accounts in writing and art exemplify the spirit of adventure. See first edition books by Charles Dickens, James Fenimore Cooper and Daniel Defoe along with works of art by Alfred Jacob Miller, N.C. Wyeth, Charles Marion Russell and John James Audubon.

While touring the Tales and Travels exhibition at the Museum, visitors can delight in the mini-exhibit Painting the Pages: Hidden Treasures, on view from July 13 through October 12, 2013. Featured in this mini-exhibit will be fore-edge paintings that are hidden on the edges of book pages, depicting famous battles, cityscapes and the rural countryside of the 18th and 19th centuries in England. Learn about the history of fore-edge painting and the process used to make these hidden treasures.
