Police have released the name of a small child who drowned while swimming with his family in a hotel swimming pool on Wednesday.
Police identified four-year-old Torrell Malilk Martin of Beaumont as the child who drowned at Super 8 motel, which is located at 2850 Interstate 10 East in Beaumont late Wednesday afternoon.
Family members called emergency services shortly after 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 24, stating Torrell “had drowned” in the swimming pool of the hotel. Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and “found the family” performing CPR on the boy as he lay by on the concrete at the side of the swimming pool.
Paramedics reportedly took over the CPR duties and continued to administer the technique while en route to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital. Emergency room staff from the hospital then continued the efforts to revive Torrell but could not. The emergency room doctor pronounced the young boy deceased at 6:32 p.m., Wednesday.
Detectives with the Beaumont Police Department are interviewing witnesses, including family members, “who had been swimming with the child throughout the afternoon” on Wednesday, according to a press release. Child Protective Services is also conducting an investigation into the matter.
Detectives were also scheduled to attend an autopsy, which was to be performed late Thursday.
“This incident is a heart-breaking reminder of how quickly a tragedy can occur,” stated Sgt. Rob Flores Jr. of the Beaumont Police Department. “Parents and guardians are reminded to keep a very close eye on their children when swimming. It only takes seconds for this type of tragedy to happen.”
