ORANGE — A group of women with an affinity for helping the community celebrated the end of a very successful year on Thursday.

The Service League of Orange held its annual luncheon on Thursday at Sunset Grove Country Club in Orange to bring the 2012-2013 year to a close and announced its new officers for the 2013-2014 year.

The coming year will be a big one for the Service League of Orange as the group of women prepares for its biggest fundraising event, the “Follies,” which will be held in early 2014. The “Follies” will be held Friday, Jan. 17 and Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at the Lutcher Theater. Christi Kovatch is the chairperson and Rose Thayer is co-chairperson of the 2014 “Follies.” This year’s theme will be “We Got Talent!”

New officers for the Service League of Orange were presented Thursday and include Susan Freiberg, recording secretary; Karen Stevens, corresponding secretary; Rosemary Higgins, vice president; Dina Defrates, treasurer; and Mindy McKee, president. Outgoing president is Carolyn Lemons.

Lemons addressed the group by giving a “State of the League” address, which was basically a year-in-review report detailing the organization’s efforts and success.

The Toy Coffee fundraiser is held each year in early December inside a beautifully decorated house within the community. In 2012, the event was held in the home of Frank and Sue Pritchard. It set a record for toy donations with 660 new, unwrapped toys being donated as admission into the home. A total of $4,208 was also collected in cash donations.

Every fall the Service League provides funding to non-profit organizations which meet certain criteria through grants as part of its support of the community. The Service League provided $16,721 in grants this past year.

“We gave what we had and we think everyone was happy about it,” Lemons said during her speech.

The Service League also created three new committees in 2012-2013, including a Fine Arts committee, and one to assist Orange Christian Services and one to assist the Rainbow Room.
