Foundation invests back into community

WEST ORANGE — The West Orange-Stark Alumni Foundation, Inc. (WOSAF) started as an idea of how a class reunion could make a difference and give back to the school and community.

The class of 2001 was planning their ten year reunion when the Alumni came up with the idea of honoring Reggie Garrett, a local high school football player who unexpected passed away in 2011.

“We were hoping to give one $112 scholarship in Reggie’s honor,” Community Liaison for the W0-S ISD and President of the WOSAF Paul Thomas III said. “We were able to give seven $112 scholarships that year and eight $150 ones last year.”

Last year the organization changed the name to reflect all Alumni  and not just the class of 2001.

The group is also working on plans for a 5k run in West Orange. The original request to the West Orange City Council was denied due to concerns of the route and lack of manpower to cover the event.

“The council did what it is suppose to do which is stand up for the city,” Thomas said. “I have submitted three proposal routes which will not effect the major roads in the city such as Foreman Road, Austin Avenue or Western Avenue.”

Thomas said the concerns the council brought up were understandable.

Thomas also said he is reaching out to other police departments in the area for hiring off-duty officers for road crossings during the event.

“This is just one event amongst many the Foundation is planning,” Thomas said. “ I love Orange and it’s all about bringing people together.”
