Jones, a third-year public relations major at the University of Texas, learned she was accepted into a competitive program to study community work and social development abroad in Accra, Ghana last November.

“My major is Public Relations,” Jones said in a phone interview. “The course work is social work. I am very passionate about giving back to the community and helping others.”

Jones said she is close to raising the funds needed for the trip.

The fundraiser, Jones said, was organized with the help of family and God-parents. Frito-Lay donated the chips for the event.

“Coming from a small town like Orange, the real world can be intimidating,” Jones said. “This is an opportunity for me to not only grow as a person but gain pertinent, hands on experience handling societal and political affairs.”

Jones along with a collective of 23 other students will leave for Accra, Ghana May 18, 2014. All proceeds will go directly to funding Jones' airfare, immunizations, and program fee.
