Salvation Army hosts Volunteer Appreciation Open House

PINEHURST — The Salvation Army will hold a special event on Monday as a way to show appreciation to those who have helped so much.

The Salvation Army of Orange County will hold its Volunteer Appreciation Open House event from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., and 4 p.m. - 6 p.m., Monday, March 23, at its main location at 1950 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The event is being held in lieu of the organization’s annual dinner.

“This is something we wanted to do for a few different reasons,” said Capt. Michael Cox in a telephone interview. “Mainly, we want to show our appreciation to all of our volunteers. Without them we would not even begin to be able to do everything the Salvation Army has done.”

Cox wants to personally thank all of the volunteers who have meant so much to the organization. He attributes the organization’s success and what it was able to accomplish in 2013 to those who have donated their time.

“A lot of people who volunteer with us have never really set foot in our building or really know everything that we try and do,” Cox said. “We had over 900 volunteers who assisted us in 2013, and that’s a great help.”

Volunteers with the Salvation Army assist the agency with a variety of needs from ringing bells and collecting donations and helping with Angel Tree donations at Christmas, to working the food pantry by gathering items or even donating food and many help sort and prepare orders.

Other volunteers assist with the Boys and Girls Club’s after school and summer programs by coaching and tutoring children, while others just make time to help by cleaning the facility each day.

“Our biggest support came this past Christmas when we had over 300 people volunteer with our toy gathering and preparing toy bags for families,” Cox said appreciatively. “In a normal year, we are fortunate to have 150 people help us, so that was a big difference.”

Other reasons for Monday’s appreciation ceremony include the Salvation Army’s 125th anniversary being in the state of Texas. A bigger reason is continue the success of 2013 by generating support for 2014 and beyond.

“We appreciate our volunteers so much, but we want them to come back and help us again,” he explained. “We also want more volunteers. We want people who have not really been part of the Salvation Army to come out and see what our volunteer program is all about and get involved. It’s a great way to help the community and there are a lot of people who enjoy being part of it.”
