Hollywood Is Calling

ORANGE — News around town is that Hollywood is in our area.  I have been to Hollywood, walked the Boulevard, followed the maps to the stars' homes; put my hands on the hand prints of my favorite actors in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater.  I even tried out to be on a game show at one time.  My best friend and I stood in line all day in front of CBS Studios to get free tickets to a show.  While we waited in line Sammy Davis Jr. walked by, as well as Thelma Hopkins, who gave me her autograph, and one of the guys who starred in the TV program Starsky and Hutch walked by.

So this was a long time ago, we got into see The Dinah Shore Show.  It was a talk show and the guests that day were Redd Foxx and Zsa Zsa Gabor who had just gotten married for the twentieth time.  The reason I didn't get Sammy's autograph was because he was only giving signatures to women of his own race, everyone else he turned aside.  I hope he didn't always do that but that day it seemed to be his mood.  The guys who played Starsky and Hutch were named David Soul and Paul Michael Glaser.  Paul played David Starsky and David Soul played Kenneth Hutchinson.  David Soul walked by and I called out “Starsky”, no response.  Then I called out, “Paul” again no response because I got both his character name and real name wrong.  After calling out both wrong names I realized what I had done but it was too late for he had gone into the building.

When my wife, Sandra and I first married she worked in Houston during the week.  She would drive home on Thursday evening and drive back to work on Monday morning.  Being new to being a “PW”, pastor's wife, she was having a little difficulty remembering folk's names.  One Sunday morning one of the more experienced members of the church asked, “Sharon, one of our church members saw you in the grocery store and spoke to you, but you didn't seem to know his name, do you have a problem with names?”  We laugh about it, and sometimes I will jokingly call my wife Sharon instead of Sandra just for fun.  It is a great comfort to know that Jesus knows each of his followers by name. “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine.” (Isaiah 43:1)
