Golden Triangle Quilt Guild to host Quilt Show

BEAUMONT — If one listens closely, the sound of thread flying, rotary cutters cutting fabric and sewing machines stitching can be heard in the air as quilters prepare for the Golden Triangle Quilt Guild Quilt Show 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday, February 7, and Saturday, February 8, at the Beaumont Civic Center.

The show, aptly themed, For the Love of Quilts, will have over 250 quilts in the Judged Show and more than 30 vendors.

Patsy Broussard, of Orange, chairperson of this year’s quilt show, has been playing with fabric for over 17 years.

“I was watching television and saw a woman making a quilt,” Broussard said. “I bought a book and hand appliquéd the blocks. I did not know what I was doing.”

The first quilt, taught her several techniques in quilting and a few ways to not do in future quilts.

“It was a definite learning experience,” Broussard said. “I did it with scissors because I did not know about rotary cutters. I took a class in Beaumont to learn the tools.”

With quilting one only has to please oneself according to Broussard.

“It depends on how forgiving of yourself on how forgiving a quilt will be,” Broussard said.

Broussard said her quilts are considered traditional.

Ethel Granger of Port Arthur also makes traditional quilts but has made artistic quilts as well.

Granger has been a member of the guild for 5 years and a quilter for 11 years.

“Once I started, I have gone wild with it,” Granger said in a phone interview. “I have been quilting ever since.”

When Granger first joined the Golden Triangle Quilt Guild, she entered a quilt in the Beginner category of the show.

“I won first place,” Granger said. “I think it is the only time I won first place.”

Granger has 6 quilts entered in this year’s show.

“Everything I machine quilt on my domestic sewing machine,” Granger said. “Sometimes I will try to hand quilt smaller projects like baby quilts.”

Granger also said that quilts she shows one year will be in the auction at the following show.

The guild holds a quilts show biannually.

Tickets for the show are $6 for adults, $5 for children and seniors and will be available at the door.
