Annual Labor Day Senior Citizen Picnic honors residents

PINEHURST — It is time to honor the holiday with the 13th annual City of Pinehurst Labor Day Senior Citizen Picnic.

“It really should be our 14th year,” City Administrator Joe Parkhurst said. “But we were forced to cancel one year due to a hurricane.”

The anticipated event is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2 at the Family Worship Center Church located at 2300 North 41st Street in Pinehurst. Admission is free.

“The church is very gracious,” Parkhurst said. “They are always willing to help.”

A local band will start performing at 10 a.m. with lunch catered by Robert’s Meat Market and Steakhouse to be served at 11:30 a.m.

Fresh watermelon will also be on the menu.

Door prizes such as a 42” flat screen television and two rocking chairs will be awarded throughout the event.

The annual event began in 2000, welcomes the residents of Pinehurst to enjoy a day of fun, food family and friends, while honoring the city’s senior citizens who are ages 55 and older.

“We are expecting 650-700 people like last year,” Parkhurst said. “We are fortunate that we are not anticipating rain.”

Parkhurst said that several dignitaries were expected to attend.

United States Representative Steve Stockman is unable to attend due to being out of the country presently. Stockman’s wife will be attend as his representative.

The event is funded completely by donations of local businesses, banks, companies, and individuals from throughout the Pinehurst and Orange area.

Shuttle buses from Orange County operated from the Sabine Credit Union  parking lot to the picnic site with shuttles running every ten to fifteen minutes.

“It was a really fun way to spend Labor Day,” said Jessie Doyle, of Orange, last year after attending the event for the first time.
