Local metal bands to celebrate ‘movement,’ raise funds for charity

BEAUMONT — The local heavy metal music scene is emerging from the “underground” this weekend and going public.

Tequila Rok, located in the Crockett Street Entertainment District in downtown Beaumont, will be the site of the first ever BUMMFest this Saturday, April 13. The event is a celebration of the local heavy metal scene by the bands and its fans, and it is also a fundraising event for the Children’s Miracle Network.

The Beaumont Underground Metal Movement (BUMM) was created approximately one year ago on Facebook as a location for heavy metal musicians and fans to meet, network and promote local concerts. This Saturday’s event is an extension of that outlet.

“BUMMFest is a celebration of the local heavy metal scene,” said Jarrod Talbot, one of the founders of BUMM and vocalist of metal band Ashes of a Martyr. “There are so many great heavy metal bands in this area that people either don’t know about or just have not been able to see. Now, we all get to jam together on one stage and it’s a great way for the local metal fans to be able to see our local metal talent.”

The doors at Tequila Rok open at 2 p.m., Saturday, and admission is $12 at the door for ages 18 and older. Bands scheduled to appear, in order, beginning at 3:30 p.m. are Social Bomb, Skanky Dave, The Kingdom Mafia, Eviscerate the Proletariat, Third Massacre, Behelit, Avaris, 70 Times 7, Neil to Aldrin, Etyma, Ashes of a Martyr and Hear N’ Ade.

The event is not only generating interest for the local heavy metal scene, but it is also serving as a fundraiser for a very worthy charitable organization, the Children’s Miracle Network.

“All revenue between ticket sales and concessions from early in the day will be divided between the Children’s Miracle Network and BUMM,” Talbot explained. “We will also be taking donations throughout the day which will be directly given to Children’s Miracle Network and not included in the split. Originally, it was supposed to be a fifty-fifty split, but they will get more than that for sure.

“Most of us in the bands are just regular people and we care about people and our community,” Talbot added on why it was important to include Children’s Miracle Network as part of the event. “On a personal level, I would love to hand the people at Children’s Miracle Network a really big check when this is all done.”

Michelle Gussman, the director of Children’s Miracle Network, was excited about Saturday’s event.

“It’s always fun when we reach out to a new audience, but we’re thrilled when anyone in the community wants to do something to help the Children’s Miracle Network.

“Everyone has children or grand-children,” Gussman added. “These funds stay right here in Southeast Texas and help local children.”

Talbot said the event is already a success to him, and Saturday has not even arrived yet. With more than 300 tickets having been pre-sold, it is safe to say it will be a success.

“We didn’t care about the number of people that actually showed up, on one hand,” Talbot said. “We just wanted it to be a great crowd and have people coming in and out of the venue all day. We’re just excited about the event and ready to jam and we’re ready to do what we can to help Children’s Miracle Network too.”
