Schools set make-up days following winter weather

ORANGE — Area students may have enjoyed those unexpected days off from school due to the icy conditions this past month, but they will be making those days up very soon.

All five public school districts in Orange County will be adding days to the school calendar to recoup lost instructional days due to the rare ice storms which struck Southeast Texas this winter.

The Bridge City Independent School District missed three days of instruction but will only be adding two days back for students. The district opted to extend the school year, which was supposed to end on Friday, May 30, and will now continue with days added on Monday, June 2, and Tuesday, June 3.

This will not impact BCHS seniors who are graduating as graduation will still take place on Friday, May 30, as scheduled.

The Vidor Independent School District and Orangefield Independent School District have both selected upcoming holidays as additional instruction days.

Students of Vidor ISD and Orangefield ISD will now attend school on Good Friday, which is Friday, April 18, and Memorial Day, Monday, May 26.

Administrators of Orangefield ISD selected the holidays because the original weather make-up days, Jan. 6 and Jan. 20, had already come and gone. Vidor ISD had the same dilemma.

The West Orange-Cove Consolidated Independent School District had to find some flexibility in its remaining schedule to accommodate make-up days.

Students will now attend school for one-half day on Friday, April 18, which was originally a holiday for Good Friday. Originally, the district had students releasing early on Friday, May 23 for the Memorial Day weekend, but moved that early out day to April 18. Students will now attend a full day of class on Friday, May 23, and Monday, May 26, which is the Memorial Day holiday.

The district received a waiver for one of the three bad weather days, so students only need make up two of the days. However, teachers in West Orange-Cove CISD are required to make up all three days and will now work on Tuesday, June 10 as a teacher workday.

The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Consolidated Independent School District has had to adjust its schedule accordingly as well.

Although the district only missed two days of school due to the inclement weather conditions, students will be required to make both days up as well.

Students and teachers will observe a regular class day on Friday, May 23. This date was originally scheduled as an inservice day. The Memorial Day holiday, May 26, is a student holiday but staff will work.

Students and staff will observe a full day of instruction on Thursday, June 5. Graduation will remain Friday, June 6.
