Lexington Street Bridge under construction

PINEHURST — Construction for the replacement of a wooden bridge on Lexington Street is underway.

The project was expected to start Jan. 6 but was delayed by the weather.

“A culvert had to be manufactured for the project and it was delayed by weather,” City Administrator Joe Parkhurst said. “The crew was also delayed at a previous job due to the weather.”

The bridge was demolished Wednesday and crews had forms built in time for the cement trucks Thursday afternoon.

During the construction of the new bridge, traffic will detour through the hospital to allow access to Foskey Veterinary Clinic, 14 Lexington Drive, from the hospital’s parking lot.

Things are working well with the detour,” Parkhurst said. “The area is currently damned up while they work. We are hoping to not have a gully washer.”

Parkhurst said the area would be watched in case it needed to be opened due to rising waters.

The construction has a 120 day deadline.

Parkhurst said he was assured the work would be completed in plenty of time.

The project is funded by the Ike 2.2 Grant.
