Public meetings scheduled for controversial housing developments

ORANGE — Residents will have an opportunity to ask questions concerning three new low-housing projects on Tuesday.

The city’s housing authority is holding three public meetings on Tuesday in close proximity of the proposed sites to give the public an opportunity to discuss the issuance of tax-exempt bonds along with other available funds  for the proposed Pine Groves, Velma Jeter and Arthur Robinson II projects.

The first public hearing of the day is for the Pine Grove Development is scheduled at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Orange Christian Services’ OCS Meeting Room located at 2518 West Park Avenue in Orange.

The second meeting is for Arthur Robinson II Development proposed for the 4030 location. The meeting is scheduled 3:30 p.m. at The Palms’ Ballroom located at 4121 Interstate 10 East in Orange.

The final meeting is for the Velma Jeter Development at 5 p.m. at the Velma Jeter’s Community Building at 5700 Velma Jeter Drive in Orange.

The resolutions for the Redevelopment Plans stated for the development of up to 80 units at each location. At present, only Velma Jeter is actually scheduled for 80 unites. Arthur Robinson II is excepted to have 70 units, with 35 set aside for public housing and Pine Grove will house 66 units.

The demolition/disposition application for the Velma Jeter Homes property to the Special Applications Center of the Department of Housing and Urban Development was approved by the board. The deadline for completion of the project is July 30, 2014 as previously reported in The Orange Leader.

The meetings will give residents an opportunity to discuss the issuance of tax-exempt bonds along with other available funds  for the proposed Pine Groves, Velma Jeter and Arthur Robinson II projects. The developments are affordable housing family facilities.
