Waste collection alternatives test proposal

PINEHURST — Changes are coming to Pinehurst.

The City of Pinehurst City Council considered changes in the Republic Services/Allied Waste services for residential waste collection during the 8:30 a.m. Workshop meeting.

The proposal would change the collection from twice a week to once a week, with Republic Services supplying the 95 galloon waste containers.

The current system requires a 3-man crew for collections and the cart system could use a 1-man crew with collections only being once a week.

The city agreed to a pilot program for two months to see how the services will effect residents. There are 664 residential homes in Pinehurst and 10% will be asked to participate in the pilot program.

“Those living in apartments will not be effected,” City Administrator Joe Parkhurst said.

The general city election for Pinehurst has been called off as those positions were unopposed.

The pump the city wants to field test for the lift station at 41st Street should be installed next week.

“If this pump works the way we are hoping, we will replace the pumps, 5 for each lift, this summer when the grant money comes in,” Parkhurst said.

The pump is expected to break down items such as rags and other trash that has caused clogging issues in the pumps. The pumps become clogged from the trash and significant rains cause the next station in line to back up.

The next council meeting is 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 26 at 2497 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
