Britnells vow to run Boston Marathon again

ORANGE —

Brad and Amanda Britnell will not live in fear.

The couple are dealing with the aftershock of having been at the Boston Marathon at the time of the deadly bombings yet both say they will run again.

“We really enjoyed the city,” Brad said on Friday. “It is a shame it happened. We would like to go back and in the future we both agree we would run it again, just not next year. We will need time to recover. You can’t walk around in fear.”

Brad and Amanda were split up at the time of the two blasts.

Amanda was getting treatment after running the race at a medical tent while Brad was about 150 yards from the location of the first blast. He turned to see the cloud of smoke and 10 seconds later the second blast confirmed his fears of the attack.

Now the family has tried to be as normal as possible for the sake of their children.

“There are certainly different ways this thing could have played out for our family,” Brad said. “We have paid attention to the news and we cannot afford to not try to be normal. I sat down with Amanda earlier and was saying it feels so weird to know we were there 45 minutes prior to the blast. We are thankful to God for keeping our family safe. We are trying to go on with as much normalcy as possible but it will always be there in the back of our minds.”

Brad said he never considered running from the scene of the blasts because he would not leave without first hearing from his wife. His wife did not have her cell phone at the time and the couple finally heard from each other through text messages.

“After the blast when I was walking around, everyone is a suspect,” Brad said. “You just don’t know. My senses were heightened. It took 30 minutes to meet back up with Amanda and it felt like forever. Her adrenaline was so high she had left that medical tent and still had an IV in her arm.

“All I can say is the whole situation was very surreal.”
