Restaurant returns $14,000 found in coat to owner

McALESTER. Okla. — For a moment, Jerry Allsup feared a quick stop for lunch might have been a $14,000 dining experience.

He had left his jacket at Pete’s Place in Krebs, and the money – a large stack of $100 bills – was in the pocket. He had gone shopping for a car and was carrying cash.

It was until the next morning that the 73-year-old man from Bartlesville, Okla., realized he didn’t have the jacket or the money.

A hurried call to the restaurant – and a few verifying questions later from worker Kathy Pritchard – Allsup heard the good news: They had found the jacket and the money.

“About one and one half hours later, I was at Pete’s Place talking with Kathy and another from her staff,” Allsup said. “She insisted that I count the money, which was all there.”

Allsup said he tried to give Prichard a reward but she refused.

For the senior citizen who lives on a fixed income, it was a humbling experience. “ My eyes quickly teared up, my voice cracked, and I could only hug her to show my appreciation,” Allsup said.

“I told Kathy, that she had indeed set the bar very high for me to ‘pay it forward’ and to be a blessing to others as the only way I could repay this debt I owed her.”
