Magnolia Garden Club sets date for Home and Garden Tour

BEAUMONT — The Magnolia Garden Club of Beaumont has announced “Beyond the Garden Gate,” a home and garden tour, will take place 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 13. The tour offers entrance to five locations including public and private gardens and homes throughout the day with on the hour lectures from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on different aspects of gardening to be held at the McFaddin-Ward House.

“Each location was chosen for its diversity and natural beauty,” said chairperson Gina Crenshaw. She added that spring is the perfect time of year for this kind of tour when gardens are at their peak.

In addition to the gardens of the McFaddin Ward Home, which feature over 400 azaleas and two live oaks over 100 years old, the tour features the homes and gardens of an Acadian-style home built by renowned architect A. Hayes Town with expansive gardens sustained by earth friendly practices and a Tuscan-style farm house with a working farm that includes animals and a prolific vegetable garden.

The gardens of a stately traditional home in the Oaks Historic District are also included on the tour as well as the dog-friendly gardens of a home on Thomas Road both of which have undergone renovation and restoration after Hurricane Rita.

John Coykendall and Jeff Ross, the Master Gardener and the Garden Manager of Blackberry Farm in Tennessee, will host lectures on the hour from 10 am. until 2 p.m. at the McFaddin Ward house and will discuss topics including organic gardening and produce and garden history and design. Entrance to the lectures is included in the ticket price.

The Magnolia Garden Club is affiliated with the Garden Club of America and was founded in 1937. Its fundraising efforts support Plant Beaumont Green, the Beaumont Botanical Gardens, area conservation programs including Partnering for Plants and the Lamar University Environmental Science program.
