BC council approves lift station work

BRIDGE CITY — Hurricane Ike was more than four-and-a-half years ago and repairs are still being made in this Orange County community.

The city of Bridge City sustained catastrophic damage from the deadly storm surge created by Hurricane Ike on that fateful day of Sept. 23, 2008 as 99 percent of the houses and businesses had water damage. A lot of work and progress has been made since that time, but there is more to be done.

City councilmembers unanimously approved the awarding of a bid to Placo, Ltd. for $897,416.50 during Tuesday’s council meeting for repairs and “rehabilitation” work to seven lift stations throughout the city.

Jerry Jones, the city manager of Bridge City, said the work project, which is part of the Hurricane Ike 2.1 funding program, will take approximately 10 months to 12 months to complete.

“We have seven lift stations that we are going to totally rebuild,” Jones said. “They were all damaged during Hurricane Ike from the salt-water intrusion. A couple will have to have a total reconstruction of the structure. They will also be installing three generators

According to Liftstationservices.com, wastewater lift stations are facilities designed to move wastewater from lower to higher elevation, particularly where the elevation of the source is not sufficient for gravity flow and/or when the use of gravity conveyance will result in excessive excavation depths and high sewer construction costs.

“As soon as we get the documents signed, we are going to turn (Placo Ltd) loose on the project,” Jones added. “We hope to get started in a few weeks because it’s a very serious project and it will take 10 months at minimum to complete.”
