Trout release set for today

VIDOR — Grab your rod and reel because it is trout fishing time.

The annual release of Rainbow Trout will take place at 10 a.m., today, at Claiborne West Park in Vidor. According to a press release from the Orange County Parks Department, a total of 500 trout will be introduced into the pond inside Claiborne West Park.

Anglers must abide Texas fishing regulations, so a $5 freshwater fishing stamp is required. This is included in all freshwater license packages. Angers ages 17 and younger are not required to have a license and, therefore, do not need to purchase a stamp.

There is no minimum length requirement on catching the Rainbow Trout, but there is a daily bag limit of five fish.

“We get 1,000 Rainbow Trout each winter, so we split it into two separate stockings,” said Donna Scales, Orange County Parks Director. “We buy the fish as part of our annual budget. It costs us about $1.25 per fish, but it is something that gets people out and into the park. A lot of people have come out here for years just to catch these fish.”

Statewide regulations can be found online at www.tpwd.state.tx.us. The second of the two scheduled releases for Rainbow Trout at Claiborne West Park is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, Feb. 5.

Claiborne West Park is located adjacent to Interstate 10 West at Cow Bayou at 4105 North St. in Vidor. Winter hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., daily. Call 409-745-2255 for more information.
