VIDOR — Call it a car show for a cause.

The Southeast Texas Jeepers, a local automobile group of Jeep enthusiasts, along with the Vidor Police Department and Wal-mart in Vidor, will hold the first ever Blue Santa Show and Shine from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1, in the Wal-mart parking lot, 1350 N. Main in Vidor.

The purpose of the event is to help raise more toys for the Vidor Police Department’s Blue Santa program, which assists families and their children within the Vidor Independent School District for Christmas.

The event is not just for owners of Jeep automobiles, but for any car owner who is willing to decorate their vehicle, or even motorcycle, in Christmas swag, attire and holiday ornaments for the event.

The entry fee is a minimum donation of two new, unwrapped toys, which cost at least $10 or more each.

Sgt. Aleta Cappen of the Vidor Police Department and Blue Santa program said this event is generating a lot of excitement around town.

“The Southeast Texas Jeepers came up with this idea, and we thought it was great,” Cappen said.

The public is invited to attend this event and vote for their favorite vehicle or vehicles. People may vote by placing a new, unwrapped toy inside each vehicle they wish to vote for in the contest.

“It’s pretty simple. You purchase a toy and vote for the vehicle of your choice,” Cappen added. “In the end, it’s Blue Santa and the children who come out the winners.”

Cappen said more than 370 children have been enrolled in the Blue Santa program for this Christmas and donations are not meeting expectations.

“Collections are going OK, but we have a lot of empty boxes which haven’t been filled with toys yet,” she continued. “The toy giveaway is Saturday, December 8th, so we are needing a real push for toys to meet the number of children we have.

“A lot of people have donated cash too, but we are behind on cash donations compared to this point last year as well,” Cappen stated. “And we have more kids than we did last year, so we need all of the help we can get from the community.”

People wishing to participate in the Blue Santa Show and Shine on Saturday may arrive at Wal-mart prior to the start of the event to register.
