Free screenings available for National HIV Testing Day

BRIDGE CITY — Orange County residents will have the opportunity to take advantage of some important medical screenings being offered free of charge this week.

Family Pharmacy locations across Orange County and Southeast Texas will be offering free HIV and syphilis screenings as part of National HIV Testing Day through the combined efforts of the Texas Department of State Health Services, Family Pharmacy, Baptist Hospital, the Triangle AIDS Network (TAN), Project AIDS Land Manor (PALM), Legacy Community Health Services and the Texas Black Women’s Initiative.

The screenings will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday, June 24 and Tuesday, June 25, at Family Pharmacy locations, including 1910 Texas Ave. in Bridge City, 10897 State Highway 12 in Mauriceville and 1130 N. Main St. in Vidor. Other screening locations include 10 Plaza Drive at Calder Avenue in Beaumont and 207 E. Railroad in China, Texas.

No appointment is necessary to obtain the screenings and all testing is being offered on a first come, first served basis each day.

National HIV Testing Day, according to aids.gov, was first observed on June 27, 1985, and was established as an observance on this date each year to promote HIV testing.

This website provides valuable information, as well as a locator app for iPhone and iPad users which can be downloaded via the website.

Approximately 50,000 new cases of HIV are reported each year in the United States and 12,000 of those new cases are people ages 13 to 24-years-old, according to a press release.

A report states more than 70,000 Texans are currently HIV positive and are more likely to transmit HIV to others or die of an AIDS-related illness.

Testing is confidential and those are tested HIV positive will be linked to medical care, regarless of their ability to pay for those services.
