Special to The Leader
Vidor Rotary Club
The Vidor Rotary Club was founded in February of 1974 by the Rotary Club of Beaumont. Forty years later, the club is still going strong.
The Vidor Rotary Club will celebrate this milestone with a 40th anniversary celebration at 6 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 8, at Woods Plaza at 110 N. Main in Vidor. Tickets are only $10 and include a meal and a wonderful ’70s show by Young Audiences of Southeast Texas performer Ray Simien, as well as a recap of Vidor Rotary’s work over its 40 year existence.
Vidor Rotary President Tim Andrews is excited to be president during this special year.
“I hope folks in Vidor will choose to come out and spend the evening celebrating the many accomplishments of the club over the past 40 years,” Andrews said. “It’s going to be a great evening.”
During its 40 years in existence, the club has seen many changes. Like all Rotary Clubs, it began with only male members. However, membership changed over the years and the current club actually has more female than male members.
“It’s a service club comprised of local business men and women, community volunteers, and retirees,” Andrews continued. “Anyone wishing to make a difference in their community and the world is welcome to come find out what Rotary is all about.”
Over the years, Rotary has sponsored a car in the soapbox derby several times, provided thousands of dollars in scholarships to graduating Vidor High School seniors, and hosted the Four Way Test essay contest. The club joins in worldwide projects such as Books for the World (providing used textbooks to Third World countries), polio eradication and water well drilling. Currently the club is collecting used or new T-shirts to teach mothers in Nicaragua how to make diapers for their babies.
Locally the club provides magazines for area nursing homes and does much to provide food and books to local children through their green bus Read and Feed program, which has been honored with several District awards and grants.
For further information on how to obtain tickets to the Feb. 8 event, call or e-mail President Andrews at firstname.lastname@example.org or 409-656-3549. Former Vidor Rotary Club members, Rotarians from other clubs, or members of the general public are invited.
