Road and Bridge approved to seek applications for mechanic position

ORANGE — Orange County Commissioners Court approves filing a mechanic position in the Road and Bridge Department which has been vacant since the end of April.

The item was passed with a 3-1 vote. Commissioner Pct. 3 John Banken votes against it. Commissioner Pct. 4 Jody Banken was not present during the Monday afternoon meeting.

“The position has been vacant for eight weeks,” County Engineer Clark Slacum said. “The mechanic stays with the Transportation Department.”

Slacum also said Transportation Department has a back log and already relies on the assistance of a ‘loaner’ mechanic from Road and Bridge when Banken asked if the department really needed two mechanics.

“We have to keep the buses running,” Orange County Judge Carl Thibodeaux said. “It is cheaper than sending them out for repairs.”

The position requires the mechanic to be certified for propane.

The busses are used for delivering Meals on Wheels to elderly and homebound residents in the area.

Earlier in the year, commissioners implemented a policy requiring a position would remain vacant for a minimum of six weeks and must be approved by the court in an effort to help reduce the budget deficit.
